April 2007

Feature
In a personal and open interview with Long Island Woman, author and Long Island-native Alice Hoffman opens up about growing up in Valley Stream, what inspires her writing, her still strong connection to the people of Long Island, her family and so much more.

“When I am on Long Island, I feel that my readers and I have had similar lives, and we are all on the same page. It feels like I’m coming home.”

Book Corner
The cosmetic surgery business has more than quintupled in the last decade and in the article “The Growth of Cosmetic Surgery: Forever Young,” Debbi Honorof talks about the history of plastic surgery and suggests several books on the topic:
Beauty Junkies: Inside Our $15 Billion Obsession with Cosmetic Surgery by Alex Kuczynski, and from Long Island authors, Face the Facts: The Truth About Facial Plastic Surgery Procedures That Do and Don’t Work by Dr. Andrew Jacono and Sex, Lies and Cosmetic Surgery: Things You’ll Never Learn From Your Plastic Surgeon by Lois W. Stern.

Baby boomers are refusing to play the role our grandparents did, retiring at age 65, living off Social Security and spending their remaining days playing cards. As a generation, we work longer, we’re more active, we’re comfortable with new technology, and we take advantage of anything that can make us look and feel younger.

FYI
Must haves for spring: figure-flattering trapeze tops for every shape; tasty and healthy Goat Cheese Rollatini recipe; Castle Rock’s fruity and spicy pinot noir; and the challenging, but oh-so-good-for-you yoga “chair pose.”

Also, starting this month there will be a new section in FYI called “Meet This Long Island Woman,” which will take a look at the life of a different Long Island woman each month. This month’s featured woman is Christine Mammes, an event planner and yoga instructor from Carle Place.

Health
Many people, as they age, develop liver spots, or lentigos as they are referred to by doctors. These brown, flat spots are harmless, but can affect a person’s cosmetic appearance. In the article, “Brown Spots: Conditions and Treatments,” Brigitte Aflalo-Calderon discusses what liver spots are, how they can be avoided, and different levels of treatment.

If you wonder about the apparition of a dark spot on your face, although you have been applying a sunscreen for many years, the answer might be in the sunburn that you got when you were a child. Often, brown spots develop in the same areas as those affected in earlier years by a sunburn.

Home
Color, color, color!—the essential decorating tool for any room in your house. In the article, “Brighten Up!: Liven Up Your Interiors Using Color,” you can learn about the psychology of color, color schemes, ideas and tips for decorating with color, and much more.

It could be said that there are too many color choices available today, which sometimes makes it very difficult to make a confident choice. But, by skillfully applying colors on the canvas that is your room, you can easily create a masterpiece of your own.

My Turn
This article, “The Weighting Game: What Your Husband Doesn’t Know…” is a hilarious, but true, look at women and their relationship with their scale, and what the men in their lives do not know or understand about a woman’s weight.

My personal involvement with the scale, as with most women I know, requires complete secrecy, precise timing and the application of advanced mathematical equations. There is no such thing in my world of just hopping up on the scale without careful preparation. It requires ritual and ceremony, and quite often, a multi-function calculator.
