Health
This month’s women’s health update explores sleep disorders, ways to have a more productive visit with your doctor, the link between alcohol consumption and your heart, the benefits of psychological intervention programs in treating cancer, new treatments for irritable bowel syndrome and how to continue getting healthcare if you have lost your insurance.
Losing your job is scary enough all by itself, but for some people, such as those who have chronic health problems that require both medications and regular visits to the doctor, that fear becomes magnified by the loss of health insurance that often goes hand in hand with the loss of one’s job.
Style
Have you made the dreaded seasonal switch in your closet? Fretting over what to wear now that spring has sprung? We have the answers right here: four essential pieces for building the perfect wardrobe right now.
The pant hem should fall where the pant hits the base of the toes to give the appearance of a long, lean leg. To prevent from stepping on the back of the pants, have a tailor take up the back of pants, just a bit, to prevent heels from ripping through the pant. A tailor can also remove the pockets, enabling the pants to lie flat against the hips and not bunch.
Book Corner
The weather is nicer, your mood is improving; why not lighten up in your reading selection as well? Columnist Debbi Honorof spoke to native Long Island woman Brenda Janowitz this month and recommends both of her books: Scot on the Rocks and Jack with a Twist.
First I wrote a book about a woman who finds the man of her dreams, and then I did. And then I wrote a book about a woman who plans the perfect wedding, and then I did. My writing has predicted my real life! I’ve really gotta watch what I write next!
Ladies at Lunch
Find out what readers just like you think about the many dining establishments all over our Island. Long Island Woman treats a reader and a guest to lunch; you get the inside information. This month, reviewers visited Waterzooi Belgian Bistro in Garden City. (You can enter for a chance to be a guest reviewer by visiting liwomanonline.com/lunch.html)
FYI
Catch the “Women’s Herstory from Across the Globe” film festival at Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington this month … relive the ‘60s (at least musically) by catching some great folk music concerts this spring … check out The Red Leather Diary and meet the author at Book Revue … and be sure to look at this month’s picks: a product (Personal Healthcare Journal); a book (Mind Over Bladder); an event (women’s health symposium); an eatery (La P’tite Framboise in Port Washington); and, a website to check out (a city insiders’ guide for “women who aren’t kids”).
Plus, meet this month’s Long Island Woman, Mindy Ferrintino Wolffe, president of Neptune Marketing, LLC.
My Turn
It’s not too late to get in swimsuit shape … or is it? Barbara Warman examines the perils of exercise in this humorous essay (isn’t laughing considered an abdominal workout?).
I joined a class for women ages 55-plus at the senior center. The rest of them had to be shapeless and as unfamiliar with exercise as I was. When I showed up in baggy sweats and a large T-shirt, I was horrified to find they appeared to be my age but slimmer, more energetic. They had fire in their eyes. I had desperation in mine.
