Feature
Grammy-award winning singer, Natalie Cole, talks candidly about her decision to follow in her famous father’s footsteps, the difficulties of not only pursuing a career in music, but also the difficulties of being a woman in show business — the demands women face that men do not, being an African American woman, and being a single mother.

It’s a very interesting combination of qualities that you need to have to be in this business. It is very visually oriented. It’s not as prejudiced as it used to be as far as women are concerned, but the bottom line is you still have to be cute, and men can get away with a lot more than women can in this business, period. Whether you’re acting or singing or a musician, when you’re a woman, you have to have the whole package, and it’s still very unfair in that sense.

Women might conceal their depression from family and friends for fear of being ridiculed or looked at as crazy or weak. However, the fact is, women experience depression about twice as often as men.

My Turn
In her article, “Lighthouse Lessons,” Holly Leigh reminisces about wonderful and timeless summer trips to Montauk with her best friend and her three young sons.

The lighthouse remains our shared point of reference that anchors us in time and place. But the true beacon that draws us together comes from the energy and spirit of three boys we once guided but whose engaging light we now follow.
