Summer Fun Guide
Getting tired of the same old beach or pool routine? Let Long Island Woman show you all the other options you have to enjoy the rest of your summer. Gardens and museums, all kinds of music, festivals and horses in the Hamptons – check out all of the interesting ideas for summer fun.
Each summer, a special exhibit is shown in the [Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center, a National Historic Site], where visitors can see those famous drips on the floor of [Jackson] Pollock’s studio. This year celebrates [Pollock’s wife, Lee] Krasner’s 100th birthday, and her work is displayed Aug. 1 to Oct. 31. September brings a series of unusual art-related films. Guided tours are available, and lectures are given.
On the Island
Women, wine and the North Fork. Read all about this winning trio, and learn about Long Island’s very own wine industry. Debbi Honorof interviewed Louisa Thomas Hargrave, who founded the first winery on Long Island with her then-husband, and is now Director of The Stony Brook University Center for Wine, Food and Culture.
Honorof also spotlights Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard, some popular events going on at other vineyards this summer and suggestions for visiting Greenport.
With more than 50 wineries on Long Island, you can spend an entire weekend on the North Fork and still not get to taste all the award-winning wines that Long Island winemakers have to offer … In addition to wineries, the North Fork offers wonderful food, romantic bed & breakfasts and a wide range of entertainment activities.
Travel
Rising costs for everything from fuel to food may have you cooling your heels at home this summer, but Long Island Woman provides some ideas for getaways that aren’t actually so far away.
French bistro La Cuvee is The Greenporter’s on-premise restaurant. Executive chef and owner Deborah Rivera Pittorino emphasizes fresh local seafood and organic produce. Her endeavors are award-winning, and this summer brings a special highlight: New World Cuisine Menus feature a different region weekly and pair the food with wines from that locale (Argentina, Australia, Greece, Morocco and more). In the fall, the restaurant will launch a series of wine dinners one Sunday per month pairing cuisine with local vineyards.
Health and Wellness Guide
Don’t let summer fun distract you from taking care of yourself! Laser hair removal, dermatology and weight control – all of these timely concerns are featured; our directory of health and wellness advertisers also includes listings for traditional medicine, holistic health, cosmetic dentistry, plastic surgery and much more.
Book Corner
Laughing at life on Long Island? Debbi Honorof reviews two books this month that can help you to do just that. Ellen Meister (Secret Confessions of the Applewood PTA) has a new novel, The Smart One, based on an actual criminal incident that occurred in Jericho about 10 years ago. Meister’s trademark sense of humor is very much present as she tells the tale of divorcee Beverly Bloomrosen whose two sisters want to run her life.
In Dear Neighbor, Drop Dead, Saralee Rosenberg returns with a story about Mindy Sherman, South Shore wife and mother with a next-door neighbor from hell and a laugh-out-loud funny inner monologue.
You can meet all of these women on Aug. 14 at 7:30pm when Debbi Honorof speaks with the authors at Book Revue in Huntington.
From the three Bloomrosen sisters shopping at Fortunoff to Mindy and Beth driving to all the LIRR stations along the South Shore of Long Island, you’ll feel right at home among the familiar landmarks of this unique place we call home.
