Survival Guide 2009

Feature
Marlee Matlin is probably best known for being a Deaf actress; she also had a popular turn on “Dancing With the Stars.” But as she makes clear in her surprising new memoir, Matlin does not want her deafness to define her. Long Island Woman had the opportunity to speak with Matlin, and she considers mother-daughter relationships, her troubled past and her special relationship with Henry Winkler and his wife.

I’m not all about being Deaf. There are certainly challenges I’ve faced as a woman in her forties, seeing the majority of roles written in Hollywood for women half my age. But what am I going to do about it? Just plug away. Create my own work, make work happen for me.

Another important name on that list is Colson Whitehead, who has written a remarkable coming-of-age novel, Sag Harbor, about African American teens whose families have been summering in Sag Harbor for several generations.

Health
This month’s Women’s Health Update covers a variety of topics, including successful dieting, why you really need your sleep and how volunteering can be good for you.

Eating breakfast – especially one that includes whole grains – reduces your risk for heart attack, stroke, type 2 diabetes and heart failure.
