Feature

Certain families have almost a mythical quality to their name. Hemingway is definitely one of these, but once you read about Mariel, you’ll discover how grounded she really is. With the release of her newest book, Mariel Hemingway's Healthy Living from the Inside Out: Every Woman's Guide to Real Beauty, Renewed Energy, and a Radiant Life, the actor/author/mother spoke to Long Island Woman about making beneficial choices, achieving inner peace and the lessons she learned from her husband’s battle against cancer.

You have to really want to make the decision to make a healthy choice. If you don't want to keep the resolution, you set yourself up by making drastic change. Instead, take little steps towards your goal, and keep the focus.

Book Corner
This time of year can leave you feeling so besieged and stressed that you just want to run away. Many women have felt this way, and some have written memoirs about their journeys. Grab one of the suggested titles and escape – even if it is only by stealing a few precious moments to read. Debbi Honorof also clues us in to a must-have guide, Reading Group Choices, and a must-visit book shop that benefits a local library.

The author not only learned many wonderful skills (cooking in Paris, Border collie training in Scotland and art and architecture in Cuba), but just as important, she learned to slow down and appreciate the moment.

Health
‘Tis the season to eat, drink and be merry … so how do you prevent it from being the season when you gain 20 pounds? Sandra Gordon gives us some tips on how to handle all the parties and make healthier choices. Plus, there is a handy chart that shows how many minutes of exercise you have to fit in to counteract certain splurges … and ideas on how to limit the calories taken in by those holiday drinks.

If you’re eating a traditional high-fat holiday meal, keep in mind that another helping (of mashed potatoes or turkey or pie) can easily add up to more calories and fat. Take a 20-minute intermission before reaching for seconds to give the urge to refill your plate an opportunity to pass.

My Turn
Another year is about to come to a close and maybe you are dwelling upon your age. Jean P. Moore provides a useful checklist so you can figure out just what is OK (staying current with fashion) and what is not OK (dressing like your daughter) once you reach a certain age.

Over the years, no matter what Sally [Field] and Diane [Keaton] were doing, I thought if I could match them pound for pound, wrinkle for wrinkle, I’d be OK. For decades, I’ve checked my progress against theirs – Now here they both are at 60, great-looking and proud of their age … This is causing me to take stock anew. What does it really mean to be OK with 60?
