Feature
Kathleen Rice was recently elected Nassau County’s first female District Attorney in 31 years. In this interview with Long Island Woman, Rice, age 40, reveals herself to be straightforward, smart, honest, humorous and thrilled about her new job. We spoke about her local roots, how she got into law and politics, the dramatic upset victory in the DA race and her future ambitions.

Book Corner
Debbi Honorof reviews Maureen Dowd’s latest book that explores the differences between men and women and the current state of feminism.

I fear that the title of Maureen Dowd’s latest book, Are Men Necessary?, might decrease its readership. What a shame. Neither a man-bashing book nor a diatribe on why men should cease to exist, this delightful book is filled with witty observations, amusing anecdotes and, for the skeptics among us, even scientific research.

Health
Teri Neyland puts a voice to endometriosis, a disease that many women often suffer from in silence.

In 1991, shortly after I was married, I was introduced to a disease that would affect the rest of my life. The name of that disease was endometriosis. As a new bride, I was experiencing more gynecological pain than I ever had before. At only 25 years old, I had: chronic pelvic pain, heavy and painful menstrual periods, severe cramping after intercourse, fatigue, lower back pain and bloating. My gynecologist at the time thought I might have what he called “endometriosis,” and he suggested because of my age, that I get pregnant as soon as possible.

Profile
She was married to Robert Barone on TV and married to the creator of Everybody Loves Raymond in real life. Monica Horan shares what it was like getting her start on the Hofstra stage and where it has taken her since.

In the spring of 1984, Monica Horan sat at Jones Beach, feeling panic. About to leave her Hofstra acting career behind, she wondered if she would ever make a life for herself in acting. She knew only one thing – she wanted nothing else.

Relationships
In preparation for their son’s wedding, Ferida Wolff and her husband take dancing lessons and learn about their marriage in the process.

I love to dance. I’ll put on a CD and move. Classical or Klezmer. Island drums or swing. It doesn’t matter. Music moves me in more ways than one. The kitchen floor is my stage, the ceramic tile providing a smooth surface for graceful glissades and a sturdy one for the pounding I give it choreographing my own Broadway numbers.

Sustenance
Horiatiki Salad, Tzatziki and Spanakopita. Linda Woolven shares some of her favorite Greek vegetarian recipes.

From its misty, heat-shimmered mountains, to its impossibly clear, aqua seas, Greece is a land of beauty: encompassing both the old and the new, in a land steeped in mythology, where the freshest, most colorful fruits and vegetables combine to create some of the most memorable vegetarian food I have ever eaten.
