February 2008

Feature
Go behind the camera with Anne Geddes, the woman famous for photographing babies (you know the ones, dressed up like flowers in pots). In her new autobiography, A Labor of Love, Geddes opens up about her own childhood, how she got started in her field and what else she is doing these days besides taking pictures (hint: it’s a lot, and one project even involved Celine Dion).

Children have a right to feel a safe haven … We established the nonprofit Geddes Trust and have contributed 1 million to Childhelp USA National Child Abuse Hotline as well as the UNICEF South Asia Tsunami Relief Effort and many other organizations. We’re all responsible for all of the children all of the time.

Style
Everything you wanted to know about lingerie and were afraid to ask – it’s all right here: the different fabrics, how to care for them, a glossary of terms and much more!

Intimate apparel is not necessarily for lounging or attracting the opposite sex. It is about positive body image. We wear it “just because” and for no one else’s pleasure but our own.

Book Corner
Find out why it’s “Reigning Cats and Dogs” on Long Island as our columnist Debbi Honorof sits down with Cynthia Baxter, Stony Brook resident and mystery writer. Baxter’s series of books always features various animals and their ailments – the heroine is a veterinarian. Clever titles and combinations of real places on Long Island to create fictional towns – it all makes for good reading.

Each book has opened a whole new door for me. My new book takes place in a community theater setting, so for three weeks, I went to every rehearsal at Theatre Three in Port Jefferson … For the book about polo, I went to Wellington, Florida near Palm Beach, which is considered the polo capital of the world … I hope to give my readers a chance to learn the inside story about something they may not have known about.

FYI
Find out other “heart days” in February (besides the obvious) … why it is so crucial – for women especially – to fight fair … curbing emotional eating and observing National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (Feb. 24 – March 1) … and meet this month’s Long Island Woman, Denise Sherman.

Adult Care
You know Victor Garber from the hit TV show Alias, but you might not know his experience with Alzheimer’s Disease in his family. Claire Yezbak Fadden shares his story and lots of other valuable information for adult children dealing with the illness and their parents.

For adult children caring for a parent with Alzheimer’s, making important decisions for them can feel overwhelming. To be prepared for this role reversal, locate financial and legal documents … soon after your loved one is diagnosed. Many community organizations, medical centers and support groups offer a variety of information and resources for caring for someone living with Alzheimer’s.

Happenings
Don’t let winter keep you cooped up – there are plenty of things going on across the Island. Just check out our calendar of events, and you’re sure to find something to tempt you.
