Feature
Nice guys finish last … or so the saying goes. What about good wives? In the case of Anne Archer, who has played her share of wholesome roles, you end up with a still successful career. The Oscar-nominated actress currently stars in the television series Privileged. When we caught up with her by phone, Archer talked to Long Island Woman about her human rights organization, her illustrious big- and small-screen career, and the impact of her generation on the women’s movement.

I feel that a woman’s right to control her body and privacy is a very big issue, and her right to birth control is a very, very big issue … I felt that we really needed to support a woman’s right to make choices in her life. It was feminism, and I grew up in that whole era, so it was important to me.

Meet the Health Professional
It’s that time of year again: the resolutions about your health that somehow go unfulfilled. Make 2009 different by consulting Long Island Woman’s directory of advertising health professionals. A variety of disciplines are represented – everything from women’s health and dentistry to plastic surgery and weight management. Learn more about the providers and make your appointment.

Health
This month, our women’s health update covers several topics. Learn how to prevent Type 2 diabetes, protect your knees from injury, and improve your chances of weight loss by keeping a food diary. Celiac disease, energy drinks and soaps are also discussed.

Women who drank two or more soft drinks per day had a 24 percent increase in diabetes risk compared with women who drank less than one soft drink per month, and those who drank two or more sweetened fruit drinks per day had a 31 percent increased risk compared with women who drank less than one per month. Diet soft drinks, grapefruit juice and orange juice were not associated with increased diabetes risk.

Book Corner
The new year often invites reflection and setting goals for self-improvement. Columnist Debbi Honorof consulted some authors, motivational speakers and life coaches to give you a head start on selecting a book to help you along your journey toward increased happiness.

You’ll have a better chance of achieving your goals and finding true happiness when you honor who you are and begin your journey in your own comfort zone, rather than setting goals that are a 180-degree departure from your authentic self. Positive changes need to happen deliberately, incrementally and organically. Sometimes you don’t have to find advice on the bookshelves because the knowledge is actually inside you.

Ladies at Lunch
Find out what readers just like you think about the many dining establishments all over our Island. Long Island Woman treats a reader and a guest to lunch; you get the inside information. This month, reviewers visited Bistro 44 in Northport and the Victorian Tea Room in Farmingdale. (Sign up to do a review at liwomanonline.com/lunch.html)
