Feature
Gina Gershon is beautiful and talented – maybe even more than you realize. The actress known for playing a stripper

and a lesbian in the movies (Showgirls and Bound) is also a Broadway star, an author and a singer with an album. Gershon is currently in Bye Bye Birdie with John Stamos; the Broadway revival is scheduled to end its run this month. Long Island Woman recently spoke to Gershon during a rehearsal for the play.

People must think that I’m a killer lesbian rocker homicidal chick sort of person … I have a very eclectic career. People who are into music only know me for my music side. When I wrote “Camp Creepy Time” and did book signings, it felt like kids only knew me as the writer of that book. And then people who watch Curb Your Enthusiasm might not know anything about my weird independent movies.

Health
The latest round up of health information at your fingertips: whether coffee is good for you; why you should improve your posture; the importance of folic acid; how smoking is even more harmful to women; and, why sleeping is good for your waistline.

Female smokers in the study experienced reduced lung function at a lower level of smoking exposure and at an earlier age than men … Women may tolerate small amounts of tobacco worse than men.

Book Corner
Columnist Debbi Honorof introduces us to a wonderful local resource this month: Herstory Writers Workshop. Erika Duncan founded the organization almost by accident, but it has grown into a renowned program that recently started publishing books written by workshop participants.

Duncan says, “As we seek to bring our work to a wider public, our trickiest task is reconciling the clear visibility that our empathy-based approach enjoys in social justice and healing circles, with what many people refer to as ‘our best kept secret’ – the power of the art that emerges from following our method.

Beauty
Don’t let the winter doldrums get you down; try out a self-tanning product with our handy tips on how to apply the stuff as well as recommendations for what to buy.

Experimenting with several products until finding one that fits the desired look is inevitable … Check out a new product by spreading a small amount on an area of the body that is easily concealable, like the stomach, just to get an idea of the color … For the most natural results, select a shade based on your natural skin tone, not the color tan desired.

FYI
An art exhibit focused on women opens at the Nassau County Museum of Art on Jan. 10 … check out the 20 must-haves to be Fab Over Fifty … Avalon Organics has a line of lavender hair products that can put some spring in your winter … keep track of the new year on a calendar featuring music legends and their animals … make a new year’s resolution to do your part for the environment by going electronic on your bill paying and bank statements … don’t miss this month’s picks: a product (plastic expandable vases); a book (New York City in the Great Depression: Sheltering the Homeless); an event (author and artist Vivian Swift at the Port Washington Public Library); an eatery (Waterzooi); and, a website to check out (Gothamist.com).
Plus, meet this month’s Long Island Woman, Maria Prieto, Founder of The Hispanic Network.

My Turn
Another year has arrived, and it might be making you feel old. Find solace in this essay about breaking down and getting those bifocals.

I was halfway to the car before I realized I had picked up a recipe for clam chowder instead of my prescription. The lovely blond salesgirls – sans glasses – showed me frames … “You need bifocals?” She obviously doubted I was old enough to warrant them.
