Joan Lunden is still going strong, as a journalist and a mom. America’s sweetheart from Good Morning America is back on television hosting “DirecTV Hometown Heroes.” In addition to her three grown daughters (all in their twenties), she has two sets of twins under 5. We spoke to Lunden recently about her new project, her memories from doing TV in New York in the 80s and how she views her full family life.

“I really am quite representative of what’s happening in our country,” Lunden says. “The divorce rate is around 51 percent, so I’d venture to say you have more put-together families than traditional ones. Many families have a first round and then a second round – I hear stories everywhere I go. I’m not so incredibly unusual, but of course, when you’re going through it, you think you’re the only one doing it.”

Book Corner
It’s time to take control of your finances, and this month’s book selection can tell you how. Columnist Debbi Honorof reviews Rich Woman: A Book on Investing for Women Because I Hate Being Told What To Do! by Kim Kiyosaki.

Kim’s name may sound familiar to you as the wife of Robert Kiyosaki, mega-bestselling author … Kim, however, is an investment authority – and self-made millionaire – in her own right, and she wants to pass that knowledge and experience along to other women. The book reads more like a conversation than a rule book, and the lessons taught are easily learned and absorbed.

And on the lighter side, check out this fun summer read (but you have to read the magazine to get the title!).

Anyone who has spent time on Fire Island (as I have) will love this wonderful book filled with exquisite photographs and inspirational musings on life. Photographs are on display at Drew Patrick Day Spa, 128 Main St., Bay Shore, through June 29.

FYI
A new reality show proves women are not washed up at 25 (what took them so long to realize it?) … a breast cancer symposium informs us about the latest trends in treatment, and an exercise program helps survivors stay active… party-planning tips to make your next special event a success. This month’s Long Island Woman is Sandra Rose.

Advice
Rush, rush, rush … if the pace of your life is wearing you down, read about how to slow it down. This article tells you how you can stop the multitasking madness and learn to relax (it is summer after all!).

As a young girl, I remember my mother saying: “The hurrier I go, the behinder I get.” When I was 10, this made no sense to me. Now (a couple decades later), I know exactly what Mom was trying to say. There would always be something else to do, no matter how much you had done.

My Turn
For Father’s Day, one daughter eloquently captures how a parent’s spirit can sometimes live on in tangible mementos that can be shared across generations.

We found my father’s stash of round metal cans labeled with vague titles, such as “Kathy” or “Disneyland” or “The Picnic.” The projector was stored next to them, as was the long metal tube that held the “movie screen.” Its fold-up legs creaked in protest as we set it up, and we hurriedly popped popcorn while my brother carefully threaded the old gray projector with a roll of film chosen at random.

Health
It’s barbecue season! Before you fire up that grill, consult this month’s health article for a reminder about food safety. Keep those cold salads cold and the hot food hot! Even when eating out, you need to be cautious; practical tips are provided.

If you’ve ever suffered a bout of food poisoning, you know firsthand that you don’t want to repeat that experience. According to the FDA, there are tens of millions of cases of food poisoning in the country daily, and 30 percent of such illnesses result from improper handling of food at home.

We also give you 8 reasons to swim in another Health column focused on why this activity is a winner in your summer fitness repertoire.

Water exercise benefits people of all age groups and fitness levels. If you are not an experienced swimmer, however, consider walking in the shallow end of a pool.
