Feature
Jackie Collins is still writing books. She has been doing so successfully since 1968 … and shows no sign of slowing down. Long Island Woman had the chance to learn more about the author described as a “raunchy moralist” and discovered that Collins is rather old-fashioned in many ways.

I become the characters when I’m writing them, but I’m never embarrassed because it’s not me, it’s my characters. A storyteller has to feel that way. I would say to anybody out there who wants to be a writer: You have to be true to yourself and not worry what other people are going to think about it.

Style
As much as we all look forward to the nicer weather, just thinking about shopping for a bathing suit can ruin a good time before it starts. This article will help you through the annual rite of passage.

Comfort is key and there is no reason to feel compelled to fit into the dreaded bikini. Flattering suits come in all forms in today’s market, and when you are comfortable in your bathing suit, you are more likely to enjoy your beach and pool excursions, rather than feeling uncomfortable.

Beauty
“You get what you pay for” seems to be especially true when it comes to shampoos. This article lets you know what ingredients to look for, which ones to avoid and what items are just marketing ploys.

Ingredients really are the cornerstone to shampoos and conditioners. And beyond name, price or smell, experts say they’re what you should pay attention to when choosing a product. They’re listed on labels from the highest content to lowest. If water is listed early on, you’ll have to use more to get the same results as a higher-priced brand.

Book Corner
Summertime and the traveling is … easy? It can be when you consult a travel guide, and as columnist Debbi Honorof shares with us, there are as many guides as destinations. If literal escape is not in your future, try reading a travel memoir. Guest columnist Marshall Honorof suggests some titles that might help you take a virtual vacation.

In order to choose the travel guide that best suits your need, I recommend spending time in your local bookstore, thumbing through the guides to find the ones you are most comfortable with. Some are basic guides, printed in black and white, while others have glossy color photos with elaborate fold-out maps. All feature the essential information … and all the major travel guide publishers have companion websites that offer additional information and downloads.

FYI
Learn about some must-have summer product s … go back to college without leaving your home … take in an opera at a movie theater … enjoy “The Sea Around Us” at the Nassau County Museum of Art … don’t miss this month’s picks: a product (Banglz weighted bracelets); a book (Turn Left at the Trojan Horse); an event (forensic linguistics workshop); an eatery (Wall’s Wharf); and, a website to check out (gethuman.com).
Plus, meet this month’s Long Island Woman, Diana Cherryholmes, Executive Director, Huntington Arts Council.
