Feature
Restaurant owner, TV hostess, author-  B. Smith, shares the style tips she uses in her own life on Long Island with Elyce Neuhauser.

The B stands for Barbara, and there is no secret behind it. It all started back in Smith’s modeling days at Wilhelmina Models, now one of the premier agencies in New York. “At first, I’d call up my booker and say, ‘Hi, it’s Barbara Smith, what do you have for me?’” she said. “As time went on, I just wanted the information right away, and I’d call and say, ‘Hiit’sBSmithwhatd’yahaveforme?’” She laughed. “It was much faster, and then the B just stuck. Even now, when people come into my restaurants, I still get customers who think it’s Bubba or Bessie. ‘Are you Bessie Smith’s daughter?’ they’ll ask me. But, I have to admit, I like the mystery of it.”

First Person
Roberta Carly Redford writes about smiling when she wants to.

Well, it’s happened to me again, and I still don’t understand it. This time, I was in the bakery of my local supermarket, scanning the doughnuts, when suddenly my view was cut off by a squat, bald man who had been talking to another woman. I moved aside and continued my sugar selection, when I heard a squat, bald voice say, “Smile. It can’t be all that bad.”

Health
Ninety percent of women suffer from Stress Urinary Incontinence, but no one wants to talk about it. Find out why you should.

Women have always coped with the changes that come with being a woman. From menstruation to the mood swings of pregnancy and menopause, women have mastered the art of adjusting. Stress Urinary Incontinence (“SUI”) is another “adjustment” that many women feel they must live with.

SUI is the involuntary leakage of urine associated with a cough, sneeze or laughter. Ninety percent of sufferers are women. The American Foundation for Urologic Disease, Inc. (AFUD) estimates that SUI affects 30 million women. SUI is typically found in older women who are finished with childbearing, but can be diagnosed in women ages 35-60.

Money
Amy B. Crane offers a who’s who in money advising to help you understand the options available to you before choosing a financial advisor.

The road of life is littered with financial detours. Just when you’ve navigated a smooth stretch, you hit a curve: funding a college education, financing a divorce, or managing an inheritance. Even if you’re not faced with a big-money decision, nagging issues pop up, from choosing between term and whole life insurance to the 53 investment options in your company’s 401(k) plan. If you’re in over your head or just want a second opinion, consider consulting with a financial planner. Although you might not find a budding Warren Buffett to hold your hand, there are thousands of financial planners out there, and it’s likely that one will meet your needs at a price you can afford.

My Makeover
Heidi Baranello, a receptionist from West Islip, details her experience at the Joseph Christopher Salon and Spa.

As soon as I saw Heidi, I took a look at her skin tone, eye color and existing hair color. We both decided that we didn’t want to do anything dramatic. We wanted to enhance her natural tones and features. I started with making her base color a bit darker and warming it up to a rich mahagony brown.

Style
Forget those awkward adolescent memories of shopping for your first bra and read Style this month for tips on how to make sure you are still wearing the right size.

If you’ve went up or down in weight, had a baby, weaned a child, or even gone through menopause, there’s a good chance your breasts have changed in shape and size. Supporting your current bustline with a comfortable bra is essential, when you consider a bad bra can cause chronic upper back, neck and shoulder pain and even skin abrasions. A bad bra can also make your breasts look just plain strange under clothing.
