Feature
Marilu Henner, actress, author, and health guru, talks candidly about losing both parents a young age, the road to a healthy life, re-finding the love of her life, her web site Marilu.com and her wild days on the set of Taxi.

Slowly but surely, Henner changed every aspect of her life – how she was sleeping and exercising and the foods she chose to eat. She decided that it would not be about weight anymore, it would be about her health. “It took about eight years to put together a program that worked for me, but I did it, and ever since then, I have been living it,” Henner proclaims. “It’s funny because 20-something years ago when I first started living and eating this way, everybody thought I was crazy. But now it is more and more mainstream, so I am proven correct and I am thrilled.”

Adult Care
Caring for aging parents can be a huge commitment that most people are not prepared for. “The ABCs of Caregiving,” gives suggestions on how you can prepare yourself and your life for that likely event.

The American Society on Aging says nearly 25 percent of U.S. households today have someone who cares for a senior, and most of these caregivers are women.

Book Corner
Deborah Tannen, author of New York Times bestseller, You Just Don’t Understand, has written a new book about mothers and daughters entitled, You’re Going to Wear That?. The book reflects on conversations between mothers and daughters, what is being said and what is being interpreted, something called “metamessages” and how both mothers and daughters can improve their relationship.

Words between mothers and daughters can be more hurtful or healing than other conversations because they carry so much emotional weight (both positive and negative), and this can persist even after the mother is gone. We tend to draw upon past conversation, sometimes expecting certain comments and interpreting according to conversational history. This can either hurt or comfort us.

FYI
Clever “gift” ideas for mom; this spring and summer, wedge heels are in, stilettos are out; BOSU—Both Sides Up—the latest “must have” piece of exercise equipment; Manhasset-based company, SerendipiTea, is helping to save the world, one tea leaf at a time. And meet this month’s Long Island Woman: Linda Weinberg, a librarian from Merrick.

Health
Though protecting your skin from sun damage is something women should be concerned about year-round, with summer just around the corner, we need to be even more diligent. The article, “Protecting Your Skin from the Sun: We’ve Got You Covered” will give you all the necessary tips to keep your skin from being damaged by the sun.

Both UVA and UVB rays can damage the skin. Longterm damage to DNA can be caused by UVA rays, while erythema or sunburn is caused by UVB. The easiest way to protect yourself against these rays is to wear a sunscreen.

My Turn
Darcy Bell Symes takes a wonderful, event-filled trip down memory lane when she revisits her Manhasset childhood home, pulling each and every little detail she can muster to relive those pleasant days.

Suddenly, I’m afraid I’ll remember what I see now and not what I knew then. Unwilling to risk dulling the details of my memories, I feel the urgent need to excuse myself, and I’m sure the kind man was relieved to see his unexpected visitor depart.
