Feature
Victoria Principal is quite the multitasker. You probably remember her from back in the days of “Who Shot J.R.?” since she played Pamela Ewing on Dallas for nearly a decade. Principal is also a bestselling author, and her latest venture is a health and beauty care website, VictoriaPrincipal.com. Read this month’s interview to learn Principal’s Secret and much more.

I take great joy in being a woman and a person. But I have never, ever thought that I wasn't equal. I grew up in an era where women were struggling to find a balance. Somehow I managed to find that way for myself at a very young age. It never occurred to me that I couldn't do anything as long as I tried my best.

Reader Survey
Don’t you need a vacation? Sure you do! Just answer a few questions, and you might win a trip for four to Woodloch Resort in the Poconos. You can find the survey in this month’s magazine or right here online. Good luck, and thank you for your feedback!

Book Corner
Knit one, purl two … or something like that. You’re sure to figure it out since, as Debbi Honorof points out this month, there are a plethora of reading selections lately that revolve around knitting. Women forming knitting groups that turn out to be healing influences in their lives – that is the common thread in just two of the books mentioned this month: The Friday Night Knitting Club and The Knitting Circle.

Women want to do something more than just go out to eat with friends. Knitting is very therapeutic, very relaxing, very creative … Knitting crosses all class sectors and monetary boundaries … Knitting is the common fiber.

FYI
May means Mother’s Day! Learn how the holiday began, and get some ideas on how to celebrate. Since those ideas happen to involve food, you’ll also be interested in exercising, and there are some super in-line skating opportunities this spring. This month’s Long Island Woman is Lauren Raines, a mom from Bethpage.

My Turn
A poignant essay about how a mother’s garden can remain her legacy … and how the love of puttering around your own patch of earth can be passed from generation to generation.

For my mother, the gardening season began officially on Mother’s Day … During the long summers of my Long Island childhood, my mother seemed to spend most of the day in the garden … When she died, I was in my forties with school-age children and a home and gardens of my own … As we prepared to put her house up for sale, my sorrow focused on her garden.

Health
Sometimes we are so focused on keeping our bodies in shape that we forget the toll it might take on our hair – the sweating, repeated washings, too much drying. This month, get some tips for healthy hair for athletes and find out how to keep every part of you in top condition.

Try a shampoo and conditioner especially formulated for “swimmer’s hair.” For an at-home remedy, rinse your hair with lemon juice or vinegar after swimming.

Fitness
Long Island Woman is proud to introduce “The Fitness Diaries,” by Elyce Neuhauser. She will occasionally report on an innovative activity happening on Long Island in an effort to broaden your mind when it comes to your workout. This month, Elyce shares her experience at a pole dance class.

We took to the poles, and Jeanine showed us our first spin: the Firefly. Picture a fireman coming down the pole when the sirens go off. One hand on the pole, hook your leg, then push off for a little momentum, arch your back and hang on for dear life. It was a blast!

Happenings
May brings flowers, as the saying goes … and lots of events across the Island to keep you busy! Be sure to consult our calendar of events full of classes, entertainment, exhibits, lectures and things to do outdoors.
