Books
Michelle Levine did not have to look far to recommend some good reading this month. Long Island authors are featured, along with one book that is set in Montauk. Long Beach resident William Kornblum takes us sailing with him in At Sea In The City: New York From The Water’s Edge. In Man Walks Into A Room, Huntington author Nicole Krauss offers a thought-provoking tale about a 36-year-old Columbia University English professor with a brain tumor that erases his memories past age 12. The East End sets the scene in Forgive the Moon, a moving story about one woman's journey to find herself. If you're a Halloween lover in the mood for a mystery, Long Island native Carol Goodman has what you're looking for in The Lake of Dead Languages.

Fitness
Now that bathing suit season is a fading memory, are you eating more and working out less? Contributor Stephen Billman, owner of Outside The Box Personal Training, urges you not to give up. Health and fitness is a lifestyle change, not a quick fix to get you into that dress you want to wear next month. Get motivated and make the decision to live a healthier life. Billman shares some ways to make health and fitness an easier choice.

Health
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Long Island Woman is fortunate to have two breast cancer survivors share their stories. Breast cancer activist, Geri Barish, president of One in Nine, movingly recounts her battle with cancer, which actually began in 1974 when her son underwent radiation treatment. Barish makes an impassioned plea for more research. Her story will touch you as a mother and as a woman.

Barbara Pate Glacel, Ph.D., author of Hitting the Wall: Memoir of a Cancer Journey, shares tips for how survivors can take charge of their recovery and maintain the positive attitude that is key to healing. Friends and family members of breast cancer survivors will also find useful information about how to help their loved one on this journey.
