Spa Showcase
Pamper yourself as the season is changing. We have rounded up salons and medical spas – a host of options for you to consider when taking care of you!
Health
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Our health update tells you what’s new in breast cancer research, treatments and campaigns. Learn why monthly self-examinations are so crucial to early detection; read about the promise of microsphere therapy for cancer that has metastasized to the liver; understand links between diabetes and breast cancer … and more.
CellSearch, a new blood test for women living with advanced breast cancer, captures, identifies and counts circulating tumor cells in blood making it a faster and more accurate test than imaging scans. This is the first FDA-approved test to identify and count cancer cells that have detached from a solid tumor and enter the bloodstream and is widely available in the United States.
Sustenance
As the weather starts to change and you want to cozy up at home, cheese is a perfect comfort food. Be brave and try something new! Our cheese guide tells you how to pronounce the name of the cheese, what to serve it with and why you might like it. Also, get great tips on how to store and serve the delicious treat.
Few foods are more decadent than an expertly crafted piece of cheese, yet many of us shy away from the more “exotic” offerings like camembert and mascarpone because their names, tastes and textures are unfamiliar.
Book Corner
This month, columnist Debbi Honorof reminds us that sometimes the author’s life is just as colorful as their characters. Edith Wharton is one of those authors. Enjoy this review of Wharton’s work, biographies about her and the fabulous career and full life she led.
On a recent trip to the Berkshires, I discovered more about Edith Wharton by visiting The Mount in Lenox, Mass., a beautiful historic landmark (one of only 5 percent nationwide dedicated to a woman). Wharton designed and built the house in 1901-02, based on the principles of proportion, harmony, simplicity and suitability. “The house and gardens are in perfect harmony with the nature that surrounds them.”
My Turn
Kathleen Rowe-Glendon tells a love story of sorts in “Finding Your Fountain of Youth,” but this time it’s about the love that a woman should develop for herself. “Aging happens, deal with it” is the basic message, but it is delivered with much insight and inspiration.
I like that woman I see in the mirror, lines and all. Those lines equal courage, wisdom, and most of all, humor. This is my daughters’ legacy. Don’t take so long to fall in love with yourself.
Ladies at Lunch
Break bread with Long Island Woman! This month kicks off our new column by readers just like you; we pay for lunch, you write about it. Pick up the October issue to find out what the reviewers thought about Black and Blue Seafood Chophouse in Huntington Station and Starfish in Merrick.
