Health
What are trans fats anyway, and why does every product want you to know that it doesn’t have any? Can you trust the labels? What should you look for in the ingredient list? This month’s article will answer all of these questions and more.
Before you stock up on reduced or trans-fat free versions of your favorite cookies, chips and crackers, check out what’s replacing those partially hydrogenated fats. While some foods now use healthier alternatives … others rely on saturated fats … What’s more, products that claim zero trans fat can actually contain up to half a gram.
Fitness
Elyce Neuhauser returns with another entry into “The Fitness Diaries.” In May, she tried pole dancing; now, she gives Tai Chi a whirl. Experience the classes with her as she shares her journey to finding the flow.
Just to feel the movements in my body, the gentle flow, and the recall of the movements could take months … [the teacher urges us to] “ … keep practicing. Don’t worry about getting it wrong. Just start to feel the movements, and once you have them, you can start adding on.” Today, we repeat a few beginning movements over and over and over.
Book Corner
This month’s selection reminds us that scandal has always intrigued the public, especially when it involves those who would, today, be called “celebrities.” Columnist Debbi Honorof interviewed Dr. Paula Uruburu, Hofstra English professor and author of American Eve: Evelyn Nesbit, Stanford White, The Birth of the “It” Girl and the Crime of the Century.
Dr. Uruburu … is the acknowledged expert on Ms. Nesbit, who was one of the many fascinating characters in E.L. Doctorow’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel (and feature film), Ragtime. In the days before television, the Internet, paparazzi, media frenzies and supermodels, the teenaged Evelyn Nesbit was one of the most well-known individuals of her time.
On the Island
Soap opera fans, rejoice! All My Children recently filmed right here in Port Washington, and Long Island Woman visited the set and got the inside scoop as well as an exclusive interview with daytime soap veteran and Emmy winner Beth Ehlers.
The Port Washington Yacht Club was chosen by producer Julie Hanan Carruthers because the tranquil setting matched the ambience of Pine Valley. Of course, that idyllic atmosphere did not prevent another catfight between Kendall and Greenlee … half-sisters of Erica Kane (the legendary Susan Lucci) …[and] longtime frenemies.
