Survival Guide 2009

Feature
Did you know Patty Duke’s first name is really Anna? There are probably a lot of other tidbits you could learn by reading this interview with the beloved child star. In her conversation with Long Island Woman, Duke reveals how tragic her childhood really was and how troubled her adult life became. Still, the resilient actress remains optimistic – and active (at 62, she is performing in Wicked in San Francisco).

It wasn’t until 1982 that Duke received the diagnosis that changed her life: she was bipolar … “My boys … went through hell with a wacky, often vicious mother … I talk about it now only because I want to acknowledge the victims and let people know you can get past that.”

Style
Your purse and what to put in it to look your best. Look no further than our Style column to keep up with fall handbag fashion (at various price points, too!) and get some makeup and hair tips along the way.

Date night hair and flat hair just plain don’t mix … Tousled, sexy waves are always great … and are a quick and easy option. The idea of this look is to work with the hair’s texture rather than fight it.

Book Corner
William Masters and Virginia Johnson played a crucial role in revolutionizing this nation’s relationship with sex, but many people do not even recognize their names. Acclaimed biographer Thomas Maier, a veteran Newsday reporter, seeks to change that with his book, Masters of Sex. Columnist Debbi Honorof introduces us to all of these individuals in this month’s review.

Women in this country owe a great debt of gratitude to Masters and Johnson for paving the way for the sexual revolution, feminism and an improved atmosphere and rights for women.

Beauty
Yes, this month’s column features olive oil; no, it is not a misplaced recipe. Turns out the ancient kitchen staple has many uses – everything from moisturizer to makeup remover. Read the article to learn all about it.

Olive oil is a natural remedy for many of your skincare needs; it contains vitamin E which is excellent for maintaining healthy skin. Less costly than what you may be accustomed to, it’s quite effective, easy to find and even easier to use.
